Education and Training: the facts
Vocational and technical education (VTE), also called vocational education and training (VET), is education that is designed specifically to help you develop the skills you need to work in a particular industry or occupation.
Through VTE, you can learn the skills you need to enter the workforce or retrain for a new occupation, or improve your existing knowledge and skills if you are already working.
Vocational and technical education provides job-related, practical skills – not just academic learning. It involves putting new skills into practice – ‘learning through doing’ – as well as developing theoretical knowledge.
VTE is different to a university degree, because it is focused more closely on practical skills, and is generally more closely tied to the skills required to work in a particular job. University degrees are generally more academically-focused, and deal with broad theoretical and more abstract concepts.
VTE covers education and training for the thousands of occupations not covered by university study. The majority of job-specific training is available through VTE, although some jobs (such as becoming a doctor, teacher or architect) require a university degree, and university study is also of benefit in some higher management roles.
VTE programs run the full range from basic, entry level courses to advanced courses that develop management and high-level technical skills.
VTE offers qualifications at the level of:
- Certificate I
- Certificate II
- Certificate III
- Certificate IV
- Diplomas
- Advanced diploma
